Chapter Nine

“It’s amazing.” With tears rolling down her cheeks and her kids clinging to her, Nancy gave a huge smile that erased the strain and tension from her face. “How do I say thank you for all this?”

Gemma figured her reaction was worth everything they’d struggled with.

“Your thanks will be your enjoyment of your home.” Jake grinned and pointed at Gemma. “But if I got the colors wrong or whatever, blame her. She’s the decorator.”

“Not decorator. I only suggested a few things,” Gemma said, eager to deflect attention from her part in the renovation. “Jake’s the one who got it done.”

“Thank you both. There isn’t one thing I’d change.” Nancy hugged The Haven’s handyman for what Gemma figured was about the fiftieth time, then said, “I don’t know where the funds to do this came from. Or those that paid for our trip for Jeremy’s surgery. Or for the gorgeous trees and flowers planted all around the place. Amazing.” She began listing all the changes but then shook her head when there were too many. “I wish I knew who’s paying for everything so I could say a proper thank you.”

“Enjoy your home,” Jake said. “That’s all the thanks anyone wants. That and seeing Jeremy get the care he needs.”

“His prognosis couldn’t be better. He won’t have to hold his hand over his mouth anymore.” Again tears welled in Nancy’s eyes. Baby Sophie pressed her face into her mother’s neck as if to console her.

“That’s what we need to thank God for.” Gemma stuffed down her desperation to know if she’d chosen appropriately for Nancy’s quilt room.

“I know how you c’n thank people.” Alexa, her hand firmly holding Donnie’s, stood in front of Nancy.

“How, sweetie?” the woman asked with a smile.

“Make ’em a quilt. You got lotsa stuff to do that an’ that big new machine.” She gave Gemma a quick glance.

“Alexa, honey, quilts are expensive and they take a lot of work,” Gemma explained, praying the child hadn’t figured out she was responsible for ordering the longarm quilting machine, the big deal as Jake called it, that now sat in the quilting room.

“Alexa, you are a very smart cookie.” Nancy hugged the child until she wiggled to be free. “It’s an amazing machine and I can hardly wait to use it. Thank you for thinking of that.”

“Welcome.” Alexa pursed her lips. “Kurt usta say God gived us stuff so we’d use it ta make other people happy.”

“He was right. I can hardly wait to get some time in that quilting room and try out everything.” Nancy’s longing look was interrupted by Jeremy’s plea for a snack.

“The kids have missed you and Jeremy.” Gemma laid a hand on Alexa’s shoulder. “We’ll go now so you can spend some time together.”

“Okay. But tomorrow I’m going to have a big party and everyone who had any part in fixing this house is invited. Can you spread the word, Jake?” Nancy asked, smiling when he nodded. “Thank you.”

Moments later they left Nancy inspecting the new children’s play set that had been installed in her backyard.
